PM Modi to Flag Off Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express on April 19

Vande Bharat Express ready at station for launch, connecting Katra and Srinagar with high-speed comfort and scenic views.

New rail link promises speed, comfort and a big tourism boost for Jammu & Kashmir

Katra, 18 April, 2024- In a landmark moment for Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express on April 19, bringing India’s cutting-edge rail technology to the heart of the Himalayas.

The launch of this train marks the completion of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) — a project that has been under development for over four decades. With its completion, the dream of connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India through an all-weather, high-speed rail corridor is finally a reality.

A Technological Marvel Through Rugged Terrain

Spanning 272 kilometers, the USBRL project winds its way through some of the most challenging terrain in the country. The route includes 38 tunnels and over 900 bridges, showcasing remarkable feats of engineering. Among them is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world, towering 359 metres above the riverbed — taller than the Eiffel Tower.

Another highlight is the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. Designed to withstand seismic activity and high winds, these structures stand as symbols of the technological prowess that went into making this project possible.

Travel Time Cut to 3 Hours

The Vande Bharat Express, known for its speed and passenger comfort, will now connect Katra to Srinagar in just under three hours — a massive upgrade from the current road travel time of 6–7 hours.

Equipped with automatic doors, GPS-based information systems, onboard Wi-Fi, reclining seats, and climate control, this semi-high-speed train is built to operate smoothly even in sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow — making it ideal for the region’s weather conditions.

Big Win for Pilgrims and Tourists

The rail link is expected to significantly boost religious and leisure tourism. Devotees traveling to the famous Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra will now find it easier to extend their visit to the scenic landscapes of Srinagar and Gulmarg.

For tourists, the comfort and convenience of Vande Bharat could prove to be a game-changer. Local businesses, including hotels, tour operators and artisans, are hopeful this development will unlock new opportunities.

“This train will bring in a different kind of traveller — someone who wants speed and comfort but also wants to explore the Valley more deeply,” said Farooq Ahmed, a tour guide based in Srinagar.

Helping Local Economy Roll Forward

Beyond tourism, the new rail service is expected to streamline the transport of Kashmiri goods like apples, walnuts, dry fruits, and handwoven shawls to markets across India. Farmers and craftsmen are likely to benefit from reduced logistics costs and quicker delivery times.

The government sees the rail link as a lifeline for boosting regional economic integration. It also plays a vital role in connecting remote communities to national development projects, employment hubs and education opportunities.

Decades of Challenges, Now Overcome

The journey to complete the USBRL project has not been an easy one. Engineers had to deal with landslides, extreme weather, and seismic vulnerabilities. Several sections had to be realigned multiple times to ensure safety and long-term viability.

“This is more than just infrastructure. It’s the story of determination — of engineers, workers and visionaries who refused to give up,” said a senior official from Indian Railways involved in the project.

Trial runs of the train earlier this year were successful, with the coaches performing reliably on steep gradients and tight curves.

The Broader Vision

The flag-off of the Vande Bharat train is not just a transportation event — it’s a powerful symbol of integration, unity and progress. The rail link strengthens national security, supports tourism, and promises inclusive development in the region.

For Kashmir, this is a historic step toward normalcy, growth and greater connection with the rest of India.

As PM Modi prepares to inaugurate the service, there is palpable excitement across the region. From railway stations decorated with flowers to schoolchildren waving tricolours, the Valley is ready to welcome its newest symbol of change — the Vande Bharat Express.
